Federal Preemption of State Alcohol Laws

The Issue: A proposal to ship alcohol through the U.S. mail has been introduced in the 118th Congress.

Why It Matters: Legislative proposals for shipping alcohol through the mail — which Congress has previously rejected — undermine each state’s constitutional authority to establish and enforce its own alcohol laws and determine how to ensure responsible alcohol oversight and delivery.

We Encourage Congress To: Oppose the United States Postal Service Shipping Equity Act (H.R. 3721), which seeks to preempt state alcohol laws and permit alcohol to be shipped through the U.S. mail, and any similar Senate bill.
