For decades, local bars and breweries sponsored adult recreational hockey teams in exchange for a logo on the sweater, so a “beer league” was literally a league of bar-sponsored teams. The ritual that never went away: the game ends at 11:20 pm, the room fills with the sound of tape being ripped off socks, and someone opens the cooler. Cheers to cold rinks and cold ones as hockey season begins.
