Curt Steinhorst will discuss “Crossing the Generational Divide: Unlocking the Power of Generations for Your Strategic Advantage.” Steinhorst works with Jason Dorsey, who spoke at NBWA’s Annual Convention in 2013, on behalf of The Center for Generational Kinetics. For the first time in history, four generations are working side by side. Each of these four generations – Matures, Baby Boomers, Generation X and Gen Y – is guided by a different set of values, beliefs and expectations. Steinhorst will discuss each generation’s preferences and priorities to highlight what they bring to the workforce and how to build upon common ground.
Beth Bratkovic, author of Leadership & Rock and Roll and founder of KIS-Keepin’ It Simple Consulting, will lead a session on "Conversational Capacity," the ability to remain balanced, open and focused on learning when dealing with difficult subjects and challenging circumstances. She’ll explain how conversational capacity is the secret to building successful teams that perform when the pressure is on. Bratkovic also will lead a break-out session dedicated to "Succession Planning," and applying conversational capacity skills to those conversations. Attendees will hear from distributors who have successfully implemented succession planning, then practice their own conversations.
David Belden, founder of ExecuVision International (EVI), will discuss the “Many Roles of Leadership.” EVI works with companies, associations, non-profit and governmental organizations to help them discover the underlying blockers to cooperation, understanding and profitability. What is it like for a younger family member to assume a role in the company? Which constituencies are the most important? Subordinates? Peers? Superiors? Family members? How do we satisfy them all? Belden will examine the extra layers of complexity in a family-owned business and the actions a young family member with little direct experience can take to emerge as a leader from his or her first day on the job. He also will lead a breakout session on ”Mentoring,” explaining best practices for laying the foundation for a leadership development program and the importance of mentoring for even the most senior executive.
Andrew Keyt, executive director of the Loyola University Chicago Family Business Center and president and founder of Keyt Consulting, is widely recognized as a thought leader on issues unique to family-owned businesses. Speaking from his own professional experiences and research, he will discuss “Fostering Entrepreneurship in the Next Generation,” and lead a breakout session on “Stepping into Leadership.” As a member of his own family partnership and a manager in two family-owned firms, Keyt has firsthand experience with family business challenges.
The expanded two-day conference also will include sessions on the value of state-based alcohol regulation, lobbying and communications led by members of NBWA’s leadership team, along with a Monday evening social event.
